Support Nexus Academy
Nexus Academy is specifically positioned to serve the West Chatham Tier 1 Priority Area in Pooler, Bloomingdale, and Port Wentworth, which local leadership has identified as a region in need of more diverse educational options. The Academy will be the first 6th to 8th grade charter school physically located in West Chatham, providing a tuition-free, additional choice of district schools.

As a STREAM school, Nexus Academy embeds Reading and the Applied Arts into the STEM model to strengthen local reading proficiency and creativity.

STEM careers are not just growing; they are outpacing nearly every other sector, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Employment in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics has been projected to grow by 8.1% over the next decade compared to just 2.7% growth in non-STEM occupations.
But STEM education is about more than preparing students for technical jobs. It builds critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, and data literacy, skills that are essential in virtually every modern industry. Investing in STEM education means equipping students not only for high-demand careers, but for leadership and adaptability in a rapidly evolving world.

Reading proficiency is not just an academic benchmark; it is the foundation for success across every subject. When students struggle to read at grade level, it affects their ability to comprehend science concepts, solve math problems, and engage in critical thinking. Strong literacy skills empower students to communicate clearly, think independently, and confidently navigate an increasingly complex world.
Recent Georgia Milestones data from 2024–2025 underscores the urgency locally. In Savannah-Chatham County Public School System middle schools, literacy rates declined, with fewer than half of sixth graders reading at or above grade level. District-wide ELA scores show many students performing below proficiency benchmarks. Strengthening literacy is essential to closing opportunity gaps and preparing students for long-term academic and career success.
Cultivating Creative Thinkers
Applied Arts are more than creative electives. By combining creativity, problem-solving, and real-world application, applied arts teach students how to create solutions that are both functional and visually impactful. From design and architecture to digital media and communication, applied arts cultivate innovation, collaboration, empathy, and practical thinking.
In middle school especially, applied arts play a vital role in student development. This stage is a key moment when many students begin shaping their interests and future pathways. While the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System offers meaningful arts programming, expanding applied arts opportunities to West Chatham would provide more students access to these essential, future-ready skills.
